GRACE CAFE @ ARCH STREET UMC
SUMC has been partnering with the Grace Café, an outreach mission of the Arch Street UMC since 2010. Grace Café provides a free hot meal and fellowship every Sunday evening to any in need. The number of meals served has varied from about 90 to more than 200. We have several teams that prepare and serve meals on a quarterly basis. UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF (UMCOR)
UMCOR is the humanitarian relief and development arm of the UMC. They come alongside those who suffer from natural or human-caused disasters – famine, hurricane, war, flood, fire or other events—to alleviate suffering and serve as a source of help and hope for the vulnerable. UMCOR provides relief, response & long-term recovery grants, technical support and training for partners to address emerging and ongoing issues related to disaster relief, recovery, and long-term health and development. 100% of all funds goes directly to people in need. SUMC regularly supports relief work in Ukraine. SUMC is also raising funds for Turkey/Syria after the 2023 Earthquakes. Recently, our Youth Group & Girl Scout Troop 5340 assembled 200 health kits that were sent to the Southeastern U.S. |
BOOK MINISTRY
@ St. Christopher's Children's Hospital Twice a year, SUMC received new and gently used children’s books as well as monetary donations (for the purchase of books) to be donated to our friends at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. The books are delivered to North Philadelphia where every child who is being treated there receives a book (or two, or three...) We have special collections in May and November, a ministry that has been active at SUMC since 2008. You can learn more about St. Christopher's Hospital here. Contact Sheila Bell for more information (sheilambell@yahoo.com). |

ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF
Each February, SUMC has a Cook-Off to raise money for a missional partner. In past years, contestants from the community could enter their chili, but we have recently moved to a "takeout" style of either veggie, turkey or beef chili (with cornbread & cookies) lovingly made by church members. Past ministry partners who have received the proceeds include: UMCOR, HEADStrong & Nick's House. In 2023, the Cook-OUT coincided with the Super Bowl, and included a food drive "Souper Bowl of Caring" which raised over 400lbs of food that were donated to Cokesbury UMC Food Pantry in Marcus Hook, PA. |
